Perfectionism Paralysis: Is Your Need for Perfection Sabotaging Your Consistency?
Part of the '3 I's for Consistent Action: Identify, Insight, Implement' Series
Navigating Perfectionism in the Creator Economy
Entering the creator economy has been eye-opening.
It's fulfilling to showcase my strengths, but it also brings my weaknesses and insecurities into sharper focus.
This balance affects my ability to stay consistent and maintain momentum.
Identify: The Perfectionism Paradox
Perfectionism is a double-edged sword, especially if you enjoy creating.
It's the trait most likely to disrupt my momentum and hinder my ability to stay consistent on tasks.
We all experience perfectionism to some degree, but its impact becomes particularly pronounced when you venture into self-employment, especially as a creator.
I’ve found perfectionism plays a paradoxical role:
Necessary: It drives high standards, pushing you to produce quality work that stands out in a competitive market.
Constraining: It can paralyze progress, leading to procrastination, missed deadlines, or an inability to declare a project "finished."
My main challenge is finding ways to harness perfectionism's benefits while managing its drawbacks.
This balance is crucial for maintaining both quality and productivity in your creative business.
Insight: Managing Perfectionism
The nuances in my work stand out to me like sore thumbs, even if they don’t affect the outcome.
I agonize over getting everything perfect, fearing judgment and criticism. This perfectionism can break my consistency cycle, leading to procrastination and frustration.
Given my neurodivergent brain needed techniques that aligned directly with my challenges, I sought help from an ADHD coach from Shimmer, who suggested intentionally allowing a minor, unnoticeable error in my work.
This strategy helps me break the perfectionism-induced procrastination loop and my challenges with catastrophic thinking.
Implementing Strategies: Progress Over Perfection
Here are a few strategies I've found helpful:
Focus on progress over perfection.
Allow yourself to make mistakes.
Understand that imperfections may not be mistakes.
Imperfections are part of the creative process and can lead to growth and innovation.
By adopting this mindset, I can maintain momentum and achieve my goals despite the challenges of perfectionism.
You’re Perfectly Poised to Make Progress
If you're struggling with perfectionism, you're not alone.
While attention to detail is valuable, it's crucial to permit ourselves to be imperfect.
After all, our unique perspectives and authentic voices truly resonate with our audience.
