Transitioning from traditional employment to the creator economy has been exciting and challenging.
Like many others, I’ve chosen the freedom to pursue a more fulfilling lifestyle.
However, this freedom brought an unexpected challenge: maintaining consistency.
There are many reasons we can experience consistency challenges.
Consistency Challenges with a Scattered Mind
In the creator economy, individuals earn income by creating content. It demands a high level of self-motivation and discipline.
For those of us with ADHD or a scattered mind, this can be even more challenging. On the one hand, following set schedules can feel restrictive.
On the other hand, the lack of structure leads to inconsistency.
Struggling with Focus
In the last 2 years, my ability to stay focused has declined a lot. This has led to many unmet goals.
This challenge prompted me to explore various strategies for managing a mind that struggles to stay on task.
To address this, I took a flexible approach. I prioritize tasks from my to-do list that fit my current energy levels. I'll go into this further in future articles.
This system suits my scattered mind and leads to a more effective routine.
The Impact of Modern Society
We now live in a noisy, distracting society. It is harder to stay focused and consistent. This is true for most people, not just those with scattered minds.
Some people have been able to stay on task and become successful in their fields. Those who have achieved a high level of success credit their achievements to consistently showing up to learn and eventually master their craft.
So, what does it mean to be consistent?
Simplifying Consistency: Show Up
To simplify being consistent, I think of it as just showing up.
It means committing to my intention regardless of my emotional or mental state.
It's about pushing through that emotional or mental tension that can feel like a solid wall holding us back.
James Clear refers to this as friction throughout his book Atomic Habits:
“If a particular action requires more physical or mental effort than you're willing to expend, then you won’t do it.”
Behind the Wall of Tension
In my experience, tension can arise from 3 different scenarios at various times:
External factors beyond our control (life):
Unexpected life events or daily disruptions that throw us off track.
Internal insecurities:
Self-doubt, fear of failure, or the pressure we put on ourselves to be perfect.
Information overwhelm:
Today, there is a lot of information and distractions. This can make it hard to focus and finish tasks.
I prefer managing daily challenges with simple solutions that I can implement to help me navigate overwhelm.
Building Momentum with Self-Regulation Techniques
Trying simple, actionable strategies to help start and maintain momentum is useful.
I incorporated subtle self-regulation techniques, such as deliberate breathing and mindfulness practices while on the go. These have made it easier to develop lasting positive habits.
This has helped me improve my focus and productivity levels over time.
